The support for Windows Phone 8.1 ended a few years back, and Windows 10 Mobile is soon going to end towards the latter part of 2019. This forces companies to stop the support for their applications available on the given platforms. Recently, Microsoft discontinued the Windows Store for apps for Windows Phone 8.1. WhatsApp was one of those partners who continued supporting their Windows Phone 8.1 app. This helped them in providing their services to the considerably large user base on Windows Phone 8.1 while the app worked flawlessly on Windows 10 Mobile. They never built a Windows 10 UWP application.
This means that no Windows Phone 8.1 app will be updated in the future. And since Microsoft shifted its focus from Windows Phone, users have actively been switching to other competitor platforms like Android and iOS.
