How to Make a TikTok Recipe Video

TikTok food recipes are addictive to watch because in less than a minute, you can see raw ingredients transform into mouthwatering food. They're delicious, fun, and guaranteed to make people stop and watch.

If you've seen these videos and want to make your own, you're in the right place. Let's show you how to make a TikTok recipe video.

1. Pick a Recipe

It may seem obvious, but starting with a good recipe is key. You ultimately want to end up with a dish that gets people excited, whether that's because it looks delicious, or it's something that viewers may never have seen before.

If this is your first time, start with a recipe that doesn't have too many steps. That's because you will need to film some footage at every stage of the recipe and something relatively small will make it easier to film.

The final product could be a beautifully glazed chicken thigh or an appetizing crispy tofu dish. If you've never cooked much before and TikTok is your gateway, then something as simple as deep-fried ice cream is an easy crowd-pleaser.

Finally, stick to something fun. Be it your grandma's famous pancake recipe, or your favorite party snack, if you get excited about it then likely someone else will too.

2. Consider the Video Duration

Many recipe videos are between 25 seconds and one minute long, give or take. But of course, since TikTok has introduced a longer 10-minute video limit, you could experiment with posting a more lengthy food video. For the most part, however, short and sweet will do the trick.

3. Pick a Mood

Since TikTok videos are short, picking a mood will help your video seem put-together and polished, making it stand out from the rest. Some creators like their videos to be hyper-energetic, and maybe even a bit goofy or silly. To convey this type of mood, you can use big body movements, while talking in a loud and excited voice.

On the other hand, you might want to invoke a chill, relaxed, and easy-going vibe instead. In this case, try filming yourself making gentle movements while speaking in a soft, calm voice. Choosing the right mood will also help you pick the right music, so it's worth thinking about this now before moving on.

4. Choose Your Audio

When it comes to audio, there are a few different options to consider. You can choose just one of these options, or a combination of them, and which one you choose will depend on the kind of mood you're going for.

  • Music: Pick a track that fits your mood and sets the right tone.
  • ASMR: Autonomous sensory meridian response, or in other words, the pleasure you get from hearing things sizzle in a hot pan, or liquids splash over cereal. People love to hear the sound of food cooking in videos.
  • Voiceover: You can either talk through each step of the recipe while you are cooking, or record it separately after you've finished editing the video.

For those highly aesthetic TikTok cooking videos that make you feel at peace, voiceovers are usually recorded separately. That's because it's far easier to get a nice, clean recording of yourself speaking, one that isn't interrupted by the sound of noisy chopping or loud frying.

Other people prefer not to speak at all and simply record the cooking process using the raw sounds of things being stirred, chopped, tossed, or fried.

5. Film the Most Exciting Part of Each Step

Once you're ready, you can start filming. One of the best tips for filming a recipe video is to capture just enough of each step in the recipe and only show the most exciting parts.

Fitting a 30-minute recipe into 30 seconds means that you have to cut out a lot of the boring work. You don't need to show people how you peel every clove of garlic, but watching garlic get smashed in a garlic crusher is satisfying to see on the other hand.

Creating a shot list before filming is a great idea to help you figure out what you want to show in your recipe video. But there's no problem with doing it on the fly as well, and taking plenty of shots from different angles will give you options for editing later.

You might want to consider including an intro too. If you put a shot of the final dish at the beginning of the video, it can entice people to watch the full recipe. It could even be an action or phrase that you repeat in every one of your cooking videos for consistency; this helps people recognize who you are through the style of your videos.

6. Edit Your Video

You can edit your clips together in the TikTok app, or move your operations to a third-party editor. The advantage of editing on a different software is that you can have better control over the editing process with functions that might not be available on TikTok.

During this step, trim your clips, keeping in mind that most TikTok recipe videos are less than one minute long. You want your footage to focus on the best parts of the cooking, and maybe not so much the messy and boring parts.

If this is your first time editing inside the app, these tips for how to edit your TikTok videos will help you get started. Once the video is edited and looks good enough to you, add your music or record your voiceover to bring it all together.

It might also be a good idea to include captions with all the ingredients you used, so others can follow along.

7. Upload Your TikTok Recipe Video

The only thing left now is to upload your recipe and let other people drool over your tasty creation. This could even turn into a way to make some extra cash.
